Get your hands on some of the most beautiful textiles, art pieces and regional hits from Rann Utsav.
Yes, we are talking about the glorious white desert of Rann of Kutch today. Meanwhile, how can we not talk about the most loved and visited, the gigantic desert festival of India- Rann Utsav. A desert, originally made of salt marshes is one of a kind in the state of Gujarat located in Dhordo Village. Every year lakhs of people visit the festival to take in the cultural pride and beauty of this desert. However, how can you bring back a piece of your experience for your loved ones back home?
The Festivals Handicrafts will just do the trick for you. So, on that note, here is a list of Handicrafts you should get your hands on if you visit the Rann Utsav.
1. Textiles, Prints, & Embroidery:
If you love prints and embroidery, Kutch and especially Rann Utsav has a lot to offer. You can buy the famous mirror work embroidery and customised block print textiles from the handicraft booths at the festival. Scarves, traditional skirts, shirts, bags and even flat juttis can be seen with minute mirror work and vivid block prints. Moreover, Mirror Embroidery is considered a symbol of wealth generation and is a tribute to the Gods and Goddesses.
2. Carvings and Paintings:
you can also find Mud-wall paintings usually seen on the walls of local households in villages. Miniatures of these mud-wall paintings are easily available at the festival. Also, the wooden carving is a speciality mastered by the folks living in Kutch. Further more, you can get your hands on utensils, wooden jewellery boxes, key hangers, and intricate wall pieces to enhance your space.
3. Silver Art:
You can easily find beautiful silver jewellery and ornaments at the festival. Silver-work and art by local artisans are not only very affordable but also very unique in terms of design. If you are a fan of chunky pieces of silver or oxidised jewellery the Rann Utsav could be a treasure box for you.
4. Pen-Knives & Nutcracker:
a small pen-sized yet immensely sharp knife is a rare speciality of the Kutchi Tradition. These knives are usually gifted to people as the artisans take great pride in making these small deadly weapons. A nutcracker used to cut small pieces of ‘supari’ or beetle-nut is sharp enough to chop a finger off if not used properly. These little handicrafts are a must-have if you love collecting sharp tools and knives.
5. Iron bells:
ever seen those huge bells in the monastery? Or the bell from the famous movie DDLJ? You can get yourself a miniature of it. These iron bells are cute fit-in your-palm-sized bells and make the most calming sound. You can use these as a hanging door piece or even a tiny little showpiece at your home or simply gift it.
6. Rogan Art:
take a detour and visit the village home to Mr Abdul Gafur Khatri who makes Rogan Art, surely a piece of handicraft worth buying. Since you can find Rogan Art only in Kutch, it is a handicraft worth investing in.
To put it all briefly, you could come back with an additional suitcase full of Handicrafts from the Rann Utsav. Because once you start buying these affordable must-haves, you might not stop.
