Selbari Range Trek

Selbari Range is well-known among trek lovers and is situated in Nashik, Maharashtra. Therefore, it also serves as a borderline between Nashik and Dhule. The hills stretch out from the northern part of the Sahyadris between Nashik district and Dhule. Besides the scenic beauty it has to offer, it is also home to numerous forts and ancient art forms. It also comprises a multitude of peaks including the Mangi-Tungi peak, a two-pinnacled peak with a height of around 1,331 meters.

Salher Fort – One of the twin forts of the Selbari Range

Salher and Salota are twin forts of the Selbari-Dolbari hill range. It is located near the border of Maharashtra and Gujarat, in the Baglan region of Nashik district which is 280 kilometres from Mumbai. Salher peak is the second highest peak in Maharashtra after Kalsubai. With a height of 5175 feet, the Salher fort is known as the highest fort in Maharashtra. It is located very close to the Salota fort. Both can be seen from their tops. A chance to witness the vast landscape of Maharashtra and Gujarat in a wide panoramic sweep!

History of Salher Fort

The enmity between Mughals and Marathas led to the battle of Salher in the year 1672 and also, and it was the first-ever open-field battle. It was won by the Marathas. After the battle, some of the Ancient remains are still present in both the forts. The pond at the top of Salher Fort and the temple remind us of the wonderful past the fort now holds.

Mulher Fort

The fort is located in the village of Mulher in Maharashtra’s Nashik district. Nashik is home to many popular forts. Situated at a height of about 4,300 feet above sea level, Mulher Fort lies in the Dolbar Mountain Range alongside the forts of Moragad and Hargad. The Ganesha Temple is built near one of the pond sides which adds a special beauty to the temple. It is a carved pillared temple with triangular three domes at the top. The fort also had three rooms and complexes to secure the artillery.

History of Mulher Fort

Rathore dynasty, belonging to the Bagul ancestry, ruled the Baglan region between 1310 and 1638. Mulher fort was their capital. The Mughals then gained control of Baglan. Due to the raid of Surat in January 1664 and October 1670, Shivaji Maharaj was following the route through Baglan to reach Surat. The first time the entire region from Pune to Surat was under the command of the Mughal Empire, and the second time Baglan was primarily under their control. The Mughal Empire followed Shivaji Raje on their way home but was defeated at the Kanchana Pass. Shivaji Raje was followed on their way home by the Mughal Empire.

Shortly thereafter, Shivaji Maharaj launched a campaign in the area. In January 1671, the first attack put Fort Salher under the control of the Maratha who then attacked Mulher fort but the Mughal Killedar fought back the attack. However, the Marathas captured the Chaulher fort. In the year 1671, the Mughals planned to attack Salher fort. But Shivaji sent Moropant and also Prataprao to break down the siege. They not only lifted the siege of Salher but also attacked Mulher and captured it in February 1672 which led to the merging of the entire Baglan region into Swarajya.
