Northeast India is a paradise covered with nature’s beauty. Whether you are going solo, as a couple, or taking a friends/family vacation, Meghalaya is the best place to take the much-needed break. Feel the winds on your skin, the mountains and sunsets pleasing your eyes, and the waterfalls and rivers whistling sweet tunes to you.
Sunil is from Bangalore and runs a construction company. Along with his wife, he went to Meghalaya and some parts of Assam. If you are planning to visit Meghalaya, look at Sunil’s itinerary to ensure you plan your trip correctly.
Day 1
Sunil is a bike rider and loves exploring new places while travelling. So before starting their trip, he shipped his bike to Guwahati. They took a flight to Guwahati, collected their bike, and then started their road trip to Meghalaya.
On their way to Cherrapunji, they stopped by the Umiam Lake. It is a beautiful lake overlooking the mountains and giving a panoramic view of nature’s beauty. You can also do watersports and adventurous activities if you are visiting Umiam Lake.
After a long road trip, they reached Cherrapunji, also famous as Sohra, and enjoyed the sunset.
Day 2
The Double Decker Root Bridge trek made their day adventurous, and it took them almost a complete day to finish the trek. If you are looking forward to an adventurous experience in Meghalaya, visit the Double Decker Root Bridge.
Day 3
They started their next day with a trip to the Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The view is mesmerising! Then they visited the Mawsmai cave in Cherrapunji. Walking through the Mawsmai caves is a different experience altogether. Again a good place to visit for adventure lovers. The next destination on their trip was Bangladesh View Point Sohra Mot Palong, where they enjoyed the panoramic view of Bangladesh. They also tried the traditional dresses of Meghalaya.
Day 4
They reached the Mawlynnong village, which is the cleanest village in Asia. The cleanliness and the natural beauty of the village will leave you awestruck. Another reason this place is popular is that it shows that society can break free of patriarchal norms. Women empowerment and a 100% literacy rate are two things they have already achieved.
Day 5
On the next day, they explored the Krang Suri Waterfall. It is an aesthetically beautiful place. The waterfalls drop like a curtain on the mountains, and the water is so clear. You must take a dip and enjoy it here.
Day 6
Sunil’s trip was going very pleasant so far. On his 6th day in Meghalaya, he and his wife went to the famous Dawki river. The water is so crystal clear that you can see the stones in the river’s depth. Seeing the view, you might even think that you are dreaming, but you are not. They enjoyed boating and camping, surrounded by the beautiful views in Dawki. If you are going to Meghalaya, you should visit this place.
Day 7
The following morning after their stay in Dawki, they started their road trip to Shillong and enjoyed the scenic beauty. During the road trip, you will find stunning views of hills, mountains, and the city. Visit Shillong, home to nature and culture.
Day 8
Finally, after enjoying their stay in Meghalaya, they travelled to Assam to visit a few places. They stayed at Pobitora Village Eco Camp. Surrounded by natural beauty and a simple lifestyle, it is a beautiful place to rest after coming from your day tours.
Day 9
The next day, they visited the famous Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. They spotted rhinos, and they enjoyed watching the wildlife so closely. They also took an Elephant Safari ride to explore the national park. They also stopped by the Brahmaputra riverside to have a fresh breath of air. The view is beautiful, and the calmness of the view seeps into your soul.
Day 10
On the last day of their Meghalaya-Assam trip, they visited the famous Kamakhya temple. It is one of the ancient temples in the country with great significance to history and culture.
Your Ideal Itinerary
- North-east India is the best option for a long vacation, and there is so much to explore. Sunil recommends that travellers should take at least 7-8 days to tour Meghalaya, especially the waterfalls, which are so serene.
- He also recommends that travellers avoid booking hotels because the tour packages available online are very expensive due to the limited hotels in Meghalaya. Instead, you can look for stay options while on your trip. Talking in person will get you good discounts.
- The trip cost him approximately INR 80,000*/- (including the high cost of flight tickets).
- However, if you are going solo or any other transportation mode, your trip can be much cheaper.
