Unakoti rightly called “The lost hill of faces” meaning ‘ one less than a crore.’ This place is an incredible wonder situated in northeastern India. Located in the state of Tripura, initially, it was a Shaivite pilgrimage destination famous for its rock-cut sculptures of gigantic stones. The site is a new gem in the state of Tripura and is a place that could interest travelers who love unusual yet unique travel destinations.
History
It was discovered during the 7th and 8th Centuries. As per the stories the hills are related to Lord Shiva.
The story depicts that Lord Shiva had spent a night at Unakoti along with his company of 99,99,999 Gods and Goddesses (one less than a crore) on his way to Kashi, hence the name and therefore the meaning.
At this very place, the following day when Lord Shiva woke up, the rest of the Gods and Goddess were asleep.
Angered by this site, Lord Shiva cursed and turned them to stone. This is said to be the background of the rock sculptures found here today. Thus, “the lost hill of faces” came into existence and the site still remains the same.

Moreover the place is famous for its historical heritage, massive rock sculptures like The Shiva sculpture, Lord Ganesha, head of Lord Shiva about 30 ft high, and sculptures of Goddess Durga and other mystical carvings.
Unakoti is home to large Shiva sculptures associated with Nandi bull figures. They are known as ‘Raghunandan hills’, many stories waver around this place.

Ahokastami is celebrated in Unakoti. The festival is related to Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti.
The meaning of this festival is the ‘car festival’ of Lord Lingaraj. Celebrated during March – April, it’s a parade accompanied by thousands of devotees who dance and sing.
