Whenever we think of Rajasthan, Most of us think of its scorching hot climatic conditions because of the state’s extreme terrains. However, very few people know that Rajasthan also has the most chilly nights in the desert kingdom. And also witnesses extreme cold in winters. Mount Abu is rightly called an ‘Oasis’ in the Desert because of the entirely different climate and geographical terrain. Mount Abu is home to lush green mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. Which makes it a must-visit destination to beat the heat from other cities of Rajasthan. 

It also known as Mount Arbuda or Abu Parvat is located in the Aravalli Hills Range in Sirohi District of Rajasthan. Mount Abu also has a connection to Dharma Gurus like Atri and Vashishts Gurus and was believed to be their humble abode called Gurdhara. It is said that a Yajna was performed by Sage Vashishta at the peak of the mount (today known as Guru Shikhar) which resulted in the origin of the Agnivanshi Clan. The mount has also been mentioned in the Epic Mahabharata and it is said that Arjuna traveled through the historic place.

Mount Abu today has become a popular travel destination amongst tourists because of the pleasant climate of the hill station. The temperature drops down to -1 C and sometimes even -4 C during winter.

The Hindu Temples at Mount Abu:

This place has many Hindu Temples devoted to deities like Lord Shiva, Lord Dattatreya or Dattaguru, Raghunath Ji and Adhar Devi also known as Arbuda Devi the regional goddess of Abu Parvat. The Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple was built next to the Achalgarh fort built by Rana Kumbha and is devoted to Lord Shiva. The Adhar Devi Temple is carved and made out of solid rock. On the outskirts of Mount Abu is the Durga Mata Temple at a short distance from the hill station.

Jain Temples of Mount Abu:

The hill station also has several Jain temples collectively built in a complex called the Dilwara or Delvada Temples. Carved completely out of white marble these temples are the pilgrimage place of the Jains and the architecture depicts Jain Values like simplicity, honesty, etc. The Dilwara Temples include 5 temples built within a common wall enclosed premises. Tirthankara of Jainism dedicates to Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pittalhar, Parshvanath, and Mahavir Swami. The most popular amongst these five are the Vimal Vasahi and Luna Vasahi Temples.

Mount Abu and The Brahma Kumari connection:

The Brahma Kumaris a spiritual organisation of women who collectively follow a religious way of life and have a unique ideology are based in Mount Abu Region. In addition, the Brahma Kumaris relocated from Karachi to this hilly location and became the main base of operations.

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary:

This sanctuary was established in the 1960s due to diverse flora and fauna. And covers approximately 290 kilometres of the town. Many local species of wildlife, including sloth bears, are found in the town.
