Dining in Kerala

The state of Kerala has numerous cuisine for all the foodies. One must enjoy the delights and go into a food coma while dining in Kerala. Whether you are a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian, visit God’s Own Country, Kerala.

Kerala cuisine is a  fusion of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Rice, fish, and coconut are the most common ingredients of almost all Kerala’s famous food.

Puttu and kadala curry

Puttu is a cylindrical steamed rice cake cooked in a mold with grated coconut. This is a breakfast meal of the people of Kerala and a popular dish. It is served with kadala curry, a dish of black chickpeas made with shallots, spices, and coconut milk, which is also served with ripe bananas and grated coconut.

A famous Keralan fish stew made with coconut milk, which is a  Syrian Christian delicacy. The curry is prepared in a traditional manchatti (earthen vessel) and stews lightly fried fish in coconut milk. The fish is marinated with oil, turmeric, red chili powder, lemon juice, and salt for 30 minutes before being used in the curry. The spices like turmeric, pepper, cinnamon and cloves, and fresh green chilies give it a tangy taste.

Banana fritters (snacks)

Pazham Pori or Ethakka appam are juicy banana fries that are traditional tea-time snacks. They are ripe bananas coated with plain flour and deep-fried in oil. They’re available throughout Kerala.

Palada Payasam

Palada Payasam is a sweet rice kheer that is prepared with palada. Among the many varieties of payasam, Palada Payasam is the most popular. The dish is usually prepared and served during auspicious occasions and festivals like Onam.

Thalassery biriyani

A rice biriyani is the most common dish of the Muslim community. Thalassery seaport is a center for exporting spices where European, Arab and Malabar cultures came together and influenced the cuisine. Thalassery biriyani uses a unique, fragrant, small-grained, thin rice variety named kaima. The biriyani masala and cooked rice are arranged in layers.
