You must have heard about forts, palaces, and tombs built by wealthy kings for their beloved queens or their parents. But have you ever heard of a monument specially built by a king for his maids? As unusual as it may sound, it is true. There exists a small palace built by the mighty ruler Orchha, dedicated to his maidservants. Here we shall give you a brief of this palace and what can you expect there – Teen Dasiyo ka mahal

The Story Of The Palace

Teen Dasiyo Ka Mahal literally translates to the palace of three maids as it was built for the three most favorite maids of King Orchha. The palace is located in the Nivadi district of Madhya Pradesh, close to the Orchha Fort complex. There is no record as to who were these three maids or why were they the king’s chosen ones, but one thing is for sure – they really did mean something to the king.

The Palace: Then And Now

The palace was not a massive one, but it did encompass the beauty of the local art and showcased masterful architecture. The palace, when built, would have you enter through an immaculate doorway and into a massive patio. It was said to have several rooms that had jharokha-style windows which would illuminate the palace throughout the day. Today, however, the place is partially in ruins yet gracefully carries the glory of the king. Even in ruins, this palace gives you a glimpse of traditional art and a hint of the impeccable work done by the masterful architects to build it. The main towers still stand tall with all their might, even though many areas of the palace have been reduced to nothing but rubbles.

Why Should You Visit Teen Dasiyo Ka Mahal?

Although this does not fall under any popular tourist destination, Teen Dasiyo Ka Mahal is worth a visit, especially if you are already visiting the Orchha Fort which is one of the most historic Madhya Pradesh forts. The place is antithetical to its surrounding. There is peace and quiet in this place while the outside has chaos and chatter. Maybe this is why it is referred to as poetry in stone.
