The little Andaman Islands! Coming across some new term? Or a new place? Nope. Don’t be astonished to explore this sunshine beauty. Yes! It’s summer.. and how can we not talk about beaches and islands? The Little Andaman Islands are the fourth largest islands in India. It is located on the southern side of the Andaman district and is a part of our union territory Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Location

The little Andaman Islands are about 88 km away from Port Blair. It’s located in the southernmost of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. These islands are a part of the union territory. It lies in the Bay of Bengal, in the south of the Andaman district.

The island belongs to the Onge tribe, and it has been a tribal reserve since 1957. Few people of Bengal live here. There are about 18 villages on the island. Also known as the Egu Belong by the locals. The islands are having white sand beaches and beautiful waterfalls. The activities that it offers are surfing, boating, visiting elephant plants etc.

Things to do at Little Andaman

  • Butler Bay Beach – This beach is a beauty in itself. With green-blue waters all around. This beach is perfect for a walk or surfing sport.
  • Kalapathar limestone caves- This cave is nature’s marvel. Trekking is experienced more at this place. And it’s worth it trekking groups and friends.
  • White surf waterfalls- The waterfalls are surreal and amazing to watch in between the greens.
  • Whisper wave waterfalls – These falls are silent and one can listen to the surrounding green environment of the island closely along with the silent waterfall sound.
  • Red palm oil plantations – The plantations are a must-visit tourist place and at times can witness the process as well. It’s an amazing sight to see. And there are no entry fees.

How to reach

  • By sea- The sea route connects to Hut-bay from Port Blair. The ship takes around 6 to 8 hours. The tickets can be taken in the morning from the ticket counter. And need to be booked a day before the visit.
  • By Air- The air route option is the private helicopter option. Although it’s expensive the beautiful sky view is worth the cost. The distance is about 101 km from Port Blair to Little Andaman.

The best time to visit Little Andaman Islands is from November to May. This season is ideal due to fewer rains and storms. Winters too are the best time for the little Andaman to explore and experience the sun and sand.

Things to remember

  • Carry documents as they are checked at Port Blair.
  • Carry sunscreen and cooking materials as the food available is of a limited variety
  • Trekking is allowed only with a suitable and mandatory guide.
  • Do not camp on the beach!
  • Do carry a map for island navigation
  • Carry mosquito repellent
  • Be aware of the warning signs and do not trespass for safety purposes.
  • Do not go surfing during the monsoon in the deep sea.
