Kavaledurga Fort dates back to the 9th century. Unlike many other Indian forts, it has witnessed the reign of many rulers – in the 14th century, Cheluvarangappa renovated it; in the 16th century, Nayakas of Keladi fortified the fort by building seven bastions, and further in 1763, this fort was inherited by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. To this day, we can still see some of the architectural elements that each ruler added.

Legend has it that many sages performed penance on the hills surrounding the fort. During the Treta Yuga, this site gained prominence as Parashuram Kshetra. Agastya and Valmiki are believed to have lived here for a time. During the Dvapara Yuga, it is believed that the Pandavas also stayed here for quite some time. Because of all these factors, it has become increasingly popular with people seeking spiritual fulfillment and tranquillity.

Architecture

Set against the backdrop of the Western Ghats and surrounded by lush greenery, the fort is constructed of granite blocks and walls that reach 9 to12 meters in height. There are seven levels with numerous gates at each level. The fort contains complex defenses and rainwater harvesting systems as well.

Temples

Only three of the 15 temples in the fort remain today.

At the top of the hillock is the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. You can get there by stairs. During the monsoon period, the landscape becomes vividly green, and mist engulfs the valley.

You can enjoy the panoramic view of the fort and the valley from the Shikareshwara Temple, which is located in the middle of the fort.

The magnificent temple of Kasi Vishwanatha stands slightly downhill and is notable for its two pillars flanking the entrance and its Islamic-style doorway.
