Hyderabad

‘Hyderabad’ is popularly known as the City of Nizams. It has stories of Hyderabadi Nizams and Nawabs along with a stronghold of the Islamic culture at its best and most impressive. The city was ruled by the Qutub dynasty from Persia and the Nizams from Turkey.  

During the period of Nizams Hyderabad became wealthy due to Golconda mines. The only diamond source in the world after South Africa. Thus making the Nizams wealthy. The founder of Hyderabad was Nizam al Mulk who gave the city its name that it goes by even today and previously Hyderabad was well known as the City of Bagh (gardens).

Historical Significance 

Hyderabad was built around the Charminar, which was the city center. It became a very important trading centre for diamonds and pearls and was formed around 1591 by Qutub Shahi ruler Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah. Nizams ruled the princely state of Hyderabad for 224 years. Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana, previously the capital of Andra Pradesh. Telangana was formed, and is the 4th largest city in  India. Hyderabad is known for its rich culture, food and history.

  1. Charminar: A popular tourists attraction, about 56 m tall and 30 m wide. A Trip to Hyderabad is incomplete without a visit to Charminar. 
  1. Hussain Sagar lake: Hussain Sagar lake is the largest artificial lake in Asia. Ferry rides are the best experience here. 
  1. Golconda fort: Situated about 11 km away from the city, this tourist attraction can’t be missed! The fort reveals the historical marvel of the city and also the famous sound and light show is an experience in itself.

  1. Chowmahalla Palace: Chowmahalla means four palaces. These palaces have beautiful architecture and artwork and this is a main attraction for the tourists. 
  1. Purani Haveli: It was the residential quarter for Mir Mommen, Peshwa of the Nizams. It was Later taken away and was named the Purani Haveli. 
  1. Jagannath Temple: This is a replica of the original one in Puri, and is a famous tourists attraction. 
  1. Falaknuma place: The palace was built by the Nawab Vikar ul Umra and later was taken and captured by the Nizams. Today it is the best amongst the grand and luxurious hotels in Hyderabad. 
  1. Nizams Museum: The museum is an attraction in itself, as it showcases the rich history of the Nizams, along with the vintage cars, diamond-studded tiffin and many such unique items.  It’s a must-visit tourist place.

As the world knows, Hyderabad is famous for its rich heritage, its culture and most popular for its food. Nizams and Nawabs were very particular about their taste, lifestyle and luxury. They have preserved the essence of the ‘Nawabi that and the Nizami andaz’. 

Rich Heritage:

Hyderabad has always retained its rich heritage and historic significance. The city of Nawabs and Nizams is well known for its rich stories around famous places such as the Charminar, Qutub Shahi tombs, etc. Its famous palaces and Havelis are signs of their rich heritage. The architecture and the pristine artwork showcase their luxury and lifestyle to a different level.

Culture:  

The culture of Hyderabad is a mix of both Hindus and Muslims and it reflects its history. The art and architecture, museums, exhibitions and art galleries show the Islamic culture and heritage of the Nizams. This is more evident in the old city, while in the new, it’s more of cosmopolitan culture. In fact, the language spoken is Urdu, and a particular dialect spoken by Muslims is known as Dhakni Urdu. 

They have a very unique style of ethnic clothing such as the kurta pyjama. The festivities showcase the Qawwalis, Mujaras, and the Ghazals. In fact, the artwork is in the form of Indo- Islamic art which is quite visible all over Hyderabad.

Cuisine:

The cuisine of Hyderabad is a mix of Mughal and Nawabi. In fact, Hyderabad is famous for its flavours, dry fruits, meat, spices, desi ghee etc. The Hyderabadi Biryani is most popular amongst all. The Mirchi ka Salan is served along. Apart from all, the Pheni in desserts, double ka meetha, famous Haleem during Ramzan. In fact, The Irani chai, lukhmi and naan cut biscuits are the notable preparations of Hyderabad.
