Krimchi Temples

Krimchi Temples are one of the most unique historical and architectural splendour. It is situated at a distance of about 14km from the city of Udhampur. The temples are considered to be the oldest in the state of Jammu. The ancient building consists of four prominent and three small temples. The main temple is 50 feet tall and is dedicated to Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu and Parvati. The architecture resembles classical Kashmir temples.

History

There are different stories and history behind the existence of the temple. Krimchi was the idea of King Kichak. A contemporary story is of the Pandavas who defeated and killed him. The lineage of royals who ruled Krimchi is long with some notable rulers. Some are King Dayakaran (the son of King Puran Karan), King Bahadur Singh and King Himmat Singh. According to the locals  (the ancient historic war fought between the Pandavas and the Kauravas), they were built by the Pandavas, who spent a lot of their time in this place after being sent into exile. These temples are now popularly referred to as the ‘P’ndhava Temples’.

The Caravan carrying trade goods used to stay at Krimchi when their journey to Kashmir valley. It was an ancient trade route from Kannauj to Kashmir. Once upon a time, Krimchi now remains a big halt station.

The temples have been numbered and marked from one to seven. Temple number three is the oldest, and temple number one is the most decorated one among all the temples. Nevertheless, the crumbling walls show faded abstract impressions and structures. They look very similar to the Indian temples at Chamba, Bhubaneswar and Barmour. The pillars bear leave motifs that show the creativity of that era’s architecture. Moreover, the temple is influenced by the ‘N’gara’ ‘tyle of North India.

The shrines here are distinctive and are well known for their architectural styles. Some structures resemble Greek and Hellenic architectural styles, while others resemble the temples found in Orissa. How to reach Krimchi Temple

Krimchi village is situated about 20 km away from the city of Jammu and 8-10 km northwest of Udhampur. To reach the temple site. Therefore, a detour of around 20 km along a service road branches off from the National Highway 1-A. Taxis can be hired from Jammu to reach Krimchi Temple. Therefore, the closest airport to Krimchi Temples is Jammu airport. All airlines operate regular flights to Jammu from major cities like Delhi, Srinagar and Leh. Jammu Tawi is the central railway station closest to the temple site.

Discoveries by archaeologists

Archaeologists and Researchers, in their excavations, have discovered stone idols. Even iron arrowheads, earthen pots and ancient artefacts are exhibited for public view and visits. The excavations have now stopped to retain the historical importance of these monuments.
