Originated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Chikankari is one of the most ancient and traditional art forms that is still winning the hearts of people all over the world. Therefore, we thought of giving you a brief insight into the art form’s history and why it’s an absolute must to visit the Chikankari artist community when you’re in Lucknow.

History Of The Art of Chikankari

The soul of the intriguing art of Chikankari resides in the city of Tehzeeb and Nawabs – Lucknow. It is believed that the Mughlas brought this gem of shadow embroidery to India. However, some other tales point reference to the presence of an almost exact form of embroidery in India as early as the 3rd century BC, long before the Mughals reigned India. This story breaths life as Megasthenes, a Greek historian, mentions the use of flowered muslin cloths by the Indians which lacked colours, but were simply stunning.

Another fable by Laila Tyabji states that the Lucknawi art of embroidery is inspired by the white-on-white style of embroidery. This style came from the Persian nobles to the Mughal court. There are a ton of other stories and theories, but the most popular tale of this needle craft’s origin credits the Mughal empress Noor Jahan, wife of emperor Jahangir, who introduced Chikankari to India with her spellbinding outfits. This laid the foundation for the Chikankari artist community.

Nobody today knows for sure which of these stories is true, but undoubtedly, they are all as fascinating as the art form itself.
