Chittor, officially known as Chittorgarh Fort is a magnificent beauty of Rajasthan, India. Chittorgarh is one of the largest forts in India. It is also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being one the largest fort, it is perfect for backpacking in Chittor. This significant glory extends over a hill over 180m in height; situated above the valley of Berach River.

What’s interesting? The fort has now become an amazing trekking point. It includes huge palaces, prominent gates, temples, and even incredible towers! The fort has its historic rulers of the Paramara dynasty, Alauddin Khalji, Bahadur Shah, and Akbar. The fort holds prominence in history. It is evident that women here, committed Jauhar to prevent mass rape by the Sultanate forces. It’s heritage as well as royalty in the book and corners of the site. Right from different palaces to the view of the state through the fort, it is indeed a mesmerizing beauty to explore ancient India.

How to Reach:

The fort is an extremely popular location for Chittor backpacking. Chittorgarh doesn’t have its own airport however, with modern transportation, it is easier to reach via Udaipur airport.

By Train
You can directly arrive at the destination – Chittorgarh Junction. Additionally, this station connects the other cities and is nearest to the fort.
By Bus
Buses are available from Udaipur that connect to the major cities of Rajasthan. Besides, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach Chittorgarh from Udaipur bus station.
By Car
You can opt for a road journey with your personal vehicle or hire any taxi from Udaipur. Moreover, this option allows you to explore the route covered with community settlements showcasing Rajasthani culture. It is a 2 hour drive from Udaipur. Make sure to fix the rate with the taxi driver to avoid additional costs.

Places to Visit

1. Victory Tower

Indian history is all about battlefield, bloodshed and victory over enemies. In fact, one such tower construction was an initiation by Rana Khumba to celebrate his victory. It is also known as Vijay Stambha or Jay Stambha. The dome illuminates in the evening to amplify the glamour. Lastly, with a staircase comprising of 157 steps; it goes upto the 8th floor to enjoy a scenic view.

2. Padmini Palace

Padmini, the queen, literally owned a three storied structure located in the southern part of the palace. Likewise, the concept was inspired by Jal Mahal. It is believed that this palace permitted Alauddin to view mirror image of Rani Padmini which lead to his desire to possess queen and destroy Chittor. The queen’s beauty is compared to that of Cleopatra. The site is not only a beauty but also displays the love of Rani Padmini by her act of Jauhar.

3. Kalika Mata Temple

Kalika Mata temple is situated close to Rani Padmini’s palace. It was destroyed in the 8th century when dedicated to Surya, the sun god. Later, it was rebuilt and dedicated to Lord Bhadrakali. Visitors are often attracted to pay their homage to Goddess Kali.

4. Gaumukh Reservoir

Gaumukh reservoir is an incredible detour in Chittor backpacking journey. Nevertheless, it is a significant water tank considered to be sacred by Hindus. Further, the green water sparkles by fishes and truly depict the architectural beauty of the fort. The site is captivating and worth a timely visit.

5. Fateh Prakash Palace

Chittor is all about the royalty of ancient Indians. Similarly, the palace is named after Maharana Fateh Singh which is now the house of Lord Ganesha. Further, you can witness marvelous wall paintings and murals in the palace. It is so a home to historic sculptures and noteworthy artefacts. Lastly, you just cannot miss out on this regal place of historic beauty!

6. Rana Kumbha Palace

Having a daring heart? If yes, you must visit the Rana Kumbha palace. It is the oldest palace and seems to be due to wars. Further, the palace is infamous to be one the most haunted places in Rajasthan as Rani Padmini committed Jauhar. Likewise, you can witness the stables of horses, canopied balconies and elephants of the ancient era.
