Varanasi, one of the seven sacred cities of India, is the spiritual capital of the country and also the Land of Lord Shiva known as Kashi or Benaras. Likewise, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located here and it is believed that Kashi was founded by Lord Shiva. Moreover, the Land of the Mahadev is also home to his followers the Ascetic Shaiva Sadhus – Aghori Sadhus.

Who are Aghori Sadhus?

Aghori Sadhus of Varanasi are extremely dedicated and devoted to Lord Shiva and follow the ascetic Shaivism. The name Aghori comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Aghora’ which means ‘fearless’. And it is very true to the practices of this group. However, their practices, rituals, traditions, and customs are very different from the ones we see. Aghori Sadhus are often the most intimidating and in many ways a lot more dreaded. Devotees of Lord Shiva and Kali Maa, the Aghori Sadhus often are wearing real human skulls and bones that they use as a food and drink bowl and in some cases as jewelry.

Aghori Sadhus’ habitat is mostly cremation grounds. In fact, the Ghats of Varanasi have crematories like The Harishchandra Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat, you can find most of the Aghori Sadhus here during the night.  What gives away their identity?

The Origin and Headquarters of the Sect in Varanasi:

The sect believes to be originating from Baba Keenaram. It is believed that Baba lived for 170 years. And his body is buried in a tomb along with Hinglaj. It is said that Hinglaj Mata is the Patron Goddess of the Aghoris. In fact, the Keenaram Ashram also has The Krim-Kund which is believed to have healing powers. Hence, this is the pilgrim place of the Aghori Sadhus around the globe.

The Aghori Sadhus of Varanasi follow cannibalism and consume dead humans’ flesh and blood. It is not a cause of concern as they do not kill humans and only consume dead human bodies.

Also, they are always in human ashes, have bare bodies with no clothing, and use human skulls.

Likewise, Aghoris Curse people ask them for blessings and throw human bones and skulls as prasad at the people.

They:

Share food with every animal and creature.

Are almost always consume weed and alcohol that keeps them in a state of trance.

Meditate by sitting on corpses and bodies in graveyards and crematories.

Believe participating in sexual activities in presence of the dead bodies can help in gaining supernatural powers.

In fact, Aghoris never cut their hair and let their tresses grow.

The performance of sadhanas like Shiva Sadhana, Shava Sadhana and Smashaan Sadhana are all devoted to Lord Shiva.

In fact, the Aghoris have a cure for every incurable disease in the world and they openly claim it.
