Sela Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in India. It is located in-between the West Kemang and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. In fact, this beautiful pass connects Tawang to the other parts of India. The region of Sela Pass is considered sacred amongst Tibetan Buddhists. Moreover, it is believed that there are around 101 holy lakes in the region. It is also known for its historical significance. During the 1962 Sino-Indian war, Param Vir Chakra Awardee and a sepoy of the Indian Army, Jaswant Singh Rawat. He fought all alone with the Chinese soldiers and died here.
Places to visit in Sela Pass
Sela Pass is the perfect destination for snow lovers. You can also go skiing all alone or with your squad. The major attractions in the region of Sela Pass include Sela Lake and Jaswant Garh. As per Tibetan Buddhists beliefs, there are around 101 lakes in the region.
Nuranang Waterfall
Nuranang falls are located around 40 km from Tawang town. These waterfalls are placed at a height of around 6000 feet. Moreover, they are one of the most stunning waterfalls in Arunachal Pradesh state. River Nuranang originates from the northern slope of Sela pass and forms Nuranag falls before it meets River Tawang.
Chaksam Bridge
Tangton Gyalpo, a disciple of the first Dalai Lama. Its popularly known as Lama Chag-Zam Wangpo (1385-1464) was an architect, Philosopher, and Iron chain bridge builder. He is the individual who has built more than 100 iron bridges all over the Himalayan region. During 1420-1430 he had built the bridge over the Tawang-chu river to make a passage through Kitpi and Mukto.
Thingbu Hot Spring
Thingbu village has a beautiful Hot spring in the river of Mago Chu at Nguikteng about 20 km from Jang. It is not very difficult to reach these hot springs. One needs a drive of around 3 hours from Tawang/1 hour from Jang with a short trek of about 20 minutes. Making it suitable for most travellers.
Banggachhang Lake
This lake is believed to be blessed by the presence of Guru Lopon Rimpoche. It is situated adjacent to the Banggachhang gonpa. The road to the lake remains mostly closed due to snowfall on the way. The lake can be reached both by trekking and vehicle from Sela upto the gonpa. In fact, the lake is associated with the myths of the Monpa society and the beliefs of the pilgrims.
Shonga-Tser Lake
Shonga-tser Lake is among the most popular tourist places in Tawang. It was originally a cattle grazing ground. Later, transformed into a lake after a flash flood during a major earthquake in 1950. The famous Bollywood movie Koyla, starring Madhuri Dikshit was shot here. Hence this place is now popularly known as Madhuri Lake.
Tawang War Memorial
Tawang War Memorial is a huge 40 feet high structure, resembling a stupa. This multi-hued monument was built-in memory. In the honor of Indian soldiers, who lost their lives for the country due to the Indo-Sino war.
